Many people tend to have slot problems with insomnia. Until you have to find help to fall asleep easier, one of them is melatonin that comes as a supplement But most people tend to understand it as a "sleeping pill" that is convenient to buy. No doctor's prescription is required. This is a misconception and can be dangerous if used without consulting a doctor.

Importantly, in Thailand, melatonin is not allowed as an ingredient in food or as a dietary supplement. Unlike in the United States, it is sold as a dietary supplement with less stringent quality control requirements. And can be sold online

What is "melatonin"?
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates the body's sleep and wake cycles. The mechanism of the gland depends on light and temperature, so during the day the pineal gland is inactive. But when the sun goes down, this gland will start to work. And secretes the hormone melatonin into the blood stream and is cooled from the body, causing the body temperature to drop, the wakefulness of the body decreases, making the body suitable for sleeping and feeling sleepy. But if melatonin is secreted low, it can cause sleep problems.

Normally, the brain releases melatonin into the bloodstream for 12 consecutive hours (approximately 9:00 am-9:00pm), with melatonin levels gradually declining in the morning.

Darkness stimulates the body to release melatonin. To signal that it's time to rest, while bright light, especially the blue light from the cell phone screen or computer monitor, will inhibit the release of melatonin, causing people who enjoy playing with their mobile phones before bedtime. More difficult

Melatonin is not a sleeping pill.
The benefit of melatonin is that it helps normalize the sleep cycle. But it doesn't cure insomnia directly. But stimulates a feeling of lethargy And sleep easier, not a sleeping pill in any way

The current use of melatonin Often used to relieve jet lag. Or exhaustion from the inability of the body to adjust when traveling across foreign time zones or taking a long plane

It is also used with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, adjusting sleep times for people who adjust their work schedules suddenly. People who have trouble sleeping at night and people with insomnia, especially the elderly who have trouble falling asleep because the body secretes less melatonin.

Melatonin is a controlled drug. Can't buy by myself
As mentioned above, in Thailand, melatonin is not as commercially available as in the United States. As it is classified as a dangerous drug, it must be used only on doctor's orders. Because prolonged exposure to hormones can cause harm to the body. And there can be side effects such as daytime drowsiness, headache, dizziness, nightmares, stomach discomfort, irritability, anxiety and short-term depression.

Melatonin also has some precautions that should be avoided in patients with impaired liver disease and kidney disease. Avoid use with substances that activate enzymes that destroy melatonin.

Melatonin-containing drugs are currently registered as a controlled drug. Only allowed in the hospital Or must be controlled by orders or under the advice of a doctor only
